Gulmarg is a cup-shaped meadow at 2,650 metres in the Pir Panjal, about 56 km from Srinagar. The name means meadow of flowers, and from spring the grass fills with daisies and buttercups; in winter the same meadow is under metres of snow and becomes the best-known ski ground in India. Above it all is Apharwat, and the gondola that goes up it.

About Gulmarg
The Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage ropeway. The first stage rises from Gulmarg to Kongdoori; the second continues to a shoulder of Apharwat Peak at about 4,100 metres, with views across to Nanga Parbat on a clear day. It is one of the highest cable cars in the world. Tickets for each stage are separate and sell out in season — see our guide to how the booking actually works.
The place was a summer retreat for the Mughals and then for the British, who laid out golf courses and, in 1927, a ski club. The meadows are ringed by pine and fir, and in summer ponies, walks and the golf course fill the day; in winter it is skiing, sledging and the snow itself.
The drive from Srinagar goes through Tangmarg, where the road turns uphill for the last 12 km through forest.

Is the gondola ticket included in the package?
The package covers the drive to Gulmarg and back with your own car and driver. Gondola tickets are bought separately, and we help you book them for your date — they sell out in season. Our guide explains the two stages and the booking.
How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar?
About 56 km by road through Tangmarg. The last 12 km climb through pine and fir forest.
Will there be snow at Gulmarg?
From December to March, yes, in the meadow itself. For much of the rest of the year the top of the gondola at Apharwat still has snow while Gulmarg below is green.
Can we stay overnight in Gulmarg?
Yes. The standard route does it as a day trip, but we can swap a Srinagar night for a night in Gulmarg — tell us when you write.
