The houseboats are the thing people remember afterwards. Carved walnut and cedar inside, a verandah over the water, and a lake that is completely quiet by ten at night. One night on one is in most of our packages — and you can book one on its own if that is all you want.
What a houseboat night is actually like
A houseboat is moored, not sailing. You reach it by shikara — a few minutes across the water — and that short crossing at dusk is half the experience.
Inside, the rooms are panelled in carved cedar, with a sitting room and a verandah facing the lake. Mornings are the best part: mist on the water, and the vegetable sellers rowing past before the lake wakes up.
Booked on its own, or as part of a trip
Most of our guests take one houseboat night inside a longer trip, usually after Pahalgam, so the lake is the last thing they see. But if you already have the rest of your Kashmir plan sorted and only want the houseboat, we will arrange that and nothing else.

Can I book only a houseboat, without a tour package?
Yes. A houseboat night can be booked on its own. Tell us your dates and how many rooms you need and we will quote just that.
How do you reach a houseboat on Dal Lake?
By shikara. The houseboats are moored on the lake, so a shikara takes you across from the boulevard — a few minutes, and included in getting you there.
Is a houseboat a good idea with children or elderly parents?
Often yes, but it depends on the boat and the mooring, because getting in and out is by shikara. Tell us who is travelling and we will suggest a houseboat that suits, or say honestly if a hotel would be easier.
Is a houseboat night included in your Kashmir packages?

What is the best time of year for a houseboat stay?
The lake is worth staying on year-round. Summer mornings are mild and misty; in winter the boats are heated and the lake is at its emptiest and quietest.
