Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri means "valley of milk" — the name comes from the streams that run white over the stones and stay cold all year. It is a wide, sloping meadow ringed by pine, fir and deodar, in the Pir Panjal range, and close enough to Srinagar to be a full day out and back.

About Doodhpathri

The valley sits at 2,730 metres in the Khansahib area of Budgam district. There are no permanent villages — in summer, shepherds from the Budgam plains bring their herds up and stay for the season, and in winter the road closes under snow. The meadows fill with wildflowers from spring into summer.

The main spots are Tangnar, Mujpather, Dophkhal, Sochilpather, Palmaidan and Parihas. Most people walk the meadows, sit by the stream and take a pony to the higher pastures. The bigger Tosamaidan meadow lies to the west.

The drive runs Srinagar → Budgam → Khansahib → Raiyar → Doodhpathri, about 42 km. A second route goes by the Gulmarg road through Magam and Beerwah, around 50 km.

About 42 km by road through Budgam and Khansahib — under two hours by car. From Srinagar airport it is around 40 km.

Is Doodhpathri open in winter?

No. Heavy snow closes the road and there are no permanent settlements up there. Plan it between May and October.
